We are currently working with the Devon Guild of Craftsmen who are seeking to recruit two new Trustees. Riverside Milli in the snow

The vision of Devon Guild of Craftsmen is to inspire creative excellence and increase the enjoyment of contemporary craft.  Established in 1955 as a Membership organisation they are an educational charity with a permanent home, an enterprise arm and around 300 professional craftspeople as Members, 400 friends and 30 staff. From their base at Riverside Mill, Bovey Tracey they develop activities that:

  • inspire the creativity of people across all age ranges and abilities,
  • promote the notion of creative excellence and innovation that exists in the south west
  • support the crafts sector by creating a sustainable selling and marketing framework
  • nurture makers by creating sustainable opportunities for professional development
  • enable the local and wider community to experience the diversity of contemporary craft

The role of a Trustee involves

  • contributing actively to the Board role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation,
  • ensuring the organisation complies with its governing documents and other legislation
  • ensuring the financial stability of the organisation
  • attending board meetings (six a year including the AGM)
  • taking an active part of sub-committees as required
  • attending Awaydays and Planning days
  • acting as an ambassador for the organistion.

The Guild is current seeking prospective Trustees with specialised knowledge in one or more the following areas:

  • Financial Management (the current Finance Trustee is due to step down in 2018), ideally professionally qualified
  • A trustee who will also be a non-executive director of their trading company (Devon Guild Ltd), with experience of trading within the charity sector and online retail/digital marketing and developing entrepreneurial activities.

Coldharbour Wool

Based in Uffculme, Devon, Coldharbour Mill is a late 18th century Grade II* listed building, built as a spinning factory by Fox Brothers, a very rare surviving example of its kind and unique in the South West – testament to the cloth trade that was the mainstay of the economy of the region (and the country) for centuries before, during and after the Industrial Revolution.  A Museum since 1982, retaining working examples of textile machinery, water and steam power, this small independent charity works to preserve a site of great historic and architectural value, and actively engage the public with the heritage of the woollen industry.

The Mill is entering a new chapter in its life, with exciting projects both underway and planned for the next few years.  This will bring both challenges and opportunities and so we are looking for Trustees with an appetite to be involved in this exciting journey.  You will be joining an active and involved Board who have a shared vision for the future of the Mill, supporting it to become a centre for learning about our industrial heritage and the production of wool.  With a small but dynamic staff team and a loyal band of volunteers, we are ready for the journey ahead.

We aim to increase visitor numbers through  innovative projects such as:

  • the transformation of the mill meadow into a countryside park
  • the development of alternative energy sources
  • the increased production of wool
  • extending and improving our exhibits

The diverse range of services are commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions, South Devon and Torbay Clinical Commissioning Group, Devon Partnership NHS Trust, and local authorities.  Step One is the new name for St Loye’s Foundation and its subsidiary Community Care Trust (CCT). The two charities merged in 2015 because of increasing recognition of the links between support for people with disabilities and mental health conditions.

A Trustee with financial expertise and/or commercial experience is being sought to accompany the skills of the Board of Management.  Along with the normal duties of a Trustee, you will also be expected to use your knowledge and expertise to ensure sound financial management of the charity’s resources, ensuring expenditure is in line with the organisations’ objectives, and investment activities meet accepted standards and policies.

We are therefore seeking someone who can offer a financial background within a commercial arena,  knowledge of audit processes & financial legal responsibilities together with the ability to advise on putting together budgets.

The Board meets quarterly between 3-5pm  at the charity’s offices in Exeter.

We are delighted to be working with Citizens Advice Cornwall who are looking to appoint a new Chair of the Trustee Board.  The charity provides advice across the County to nearly 20,000 people each year who face issues with debt and benefits.  This important service is delivered through 43 dedicated staff and 158 trained volunteers.  We are looking for someone who has a strong social conscience and understanding of the importance of the role the Citizens Advice Cornwall plays in the lives of its clients and the contribution it makes to our communities.

The ideal person will demonstrate an understanding of the strategic aspect of the role of a Trustee and will have the ability to lead the Board and develop the governance of the charity in a positive way.  It is important to understand the charitable ethos of the organisation and how their funding works together with the importance and value of diversity. Previous experience of working with local authorities would be really helpful.

The Board meets quarterly during the day in Camborne, but a new Chair might recommend a different time and location.  It is expected that the Chair would also meet with the CEO on a monthly basis.
